Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was created in 2000 after the agency recognized the need to have the ability to provide an option with specialized capabilities. The SWAT team’s mission profile objectives are intended to save lives during a critical incident or emergency situation.

Team members are all volunteers. These dedicated deputies take on increased responsibilities of SWAT training and performing the SWAT mission in addition to their primary duty assignments.

Team members successfully complete a rigorous selection process that is physically, mentally and technically demanding. After being accepted and assigned to the team as a probationary member, specific SWAT training begins.

The team conducts frequent, regular in-service training and members also attend various specialized schools to learn and then develop the many different skills needed to insure that they are prepared for any situation where the public’s safety requires special capabilities.
