WORK DETAIL / ROAD CREW

The Gilmer County Sheriffs Office utilizes Gilmer County Detention Center inmates for various projects around the county.

The Work Detail / Road Crew was started in March of 2003 and consists of up to six Inmate Workers supervised by a Gilmer County Detention Center sergeant. Currently Sgt.Leon Charles is in charge of the Detail. He is a certified Deputy Sheriff with additional certifications, such as firearms training, which are required to supervise the Work Detail.

The jobs performed by the detail have included lawn maintenance at various county buildings and fire stations.

They have set up impromptu courtrooms at various locations during the closing of the Gilmer county courthouse.

They have helped the Solid Waste Dept. with the removal of old tires from the county landfill.

Other tasks performed by the Detail include grounds care at the Detention Center and any other jobs on the Detention Center property that require attention.

The Work Detail has helped with many of the remodeling projects at the county Parks and Recreation Dept. from painting the old buildings to construction of new features.

County roads are now cleaner through the efforts of trash and litter pick up by the Road Crew.

In cooperation with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Road Crew duties are litter and trash cleanup along state roads within the Gilmer County area.

Through the sponsorship of GDOT, the Road Crew is furnished with a van at no additional cost to the Gilmer County taxpayers.

Not only do these activities give the Work Detail / Road Crew members an oppotunity to work out their sentences, they are a hard working team that has saved taxpayers money by performing jobs that would otherwise require the hiring outside resources.
