Gilmer deputies assist with escapee capture

Deputies from the Gilmer County Sheriff ’s Dept. formed the vital piece of a dragnet that resulted in the capture and arrest of three escapees from the Fannin County jail Monday, Sept. 24. The fugitives had been on the run since Sunday evening after they overpowered a guard at the Fannin County facility.

Gilmer County Sheriff Stacy Nicholson said one of the escapees was arrested shortly after the breakout, but the other two, who were jailed on armed robbery charges, made their way through the northern part of Gilmer County Sunday evening. The two finally gave themselves up in the Bryant Creek area of Gilmer County.

Gilmer County and Fannin County law officers were joined by canine units and a Georgia State Patrol helicopter during the search for the fugitives.
